It's a gui app that scans for available networks and stores settings for
each one.  You can designate a network as auto-connect, or connect
manually.  My sense is that it's just storage and a front end which
issues command-line commands to make the proper connections.

When I tried to add the network interface as covered by Network Manager,
I still had no luck.

OK, I'll check from the base LiveCD to see if I've just messed something

It's a built-in 802.11a/b/g card in my Acer laptop.  It identifies in
Network Settings as Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG.
