I haven't ran a recursive DNS server internally in a long time (I'm
running Dnsmasq, which is a proxy or relaying server), but I don't have
any reason to believe that the results would be any different. Any
recursive DNS service I try and query outside my LAN just results in a
timeout if I use UDP. At some point I probably did try a manual query
against a root server, though I suppose I could try that again. The
query sent to a root server is only different by a few bits from the one
sent to a recursive server.
