There is also a PEAR package that does what you want and offers
several other password file formats:
http://pear.php.net/manual/en/package.fileformats.file-passwd.intro.introduction.php
The PEAR "Auth" class interfaces with the file-password class as a
storage container:
http://pear.php.net/manual/en/package.authentication.auth.intro-storage.php
If you are familiar with PEAR packages, then this could be a good solution.
