I think I have a similar problem with two different Thinkpads -- one from
~2000 (I forget the designation) and another from ~2005 (Thinkad X41
Tablet). XFCE's network manager utterly fails to connect to my WEP-encrypted
network. KDE works fine. (I'm using various flavors of Ubuntu.)

I'll try wicd under XFCE when I get a chance. Thanks for mentioning it!
