video card problems...

As a postscript to this e-mail, I just finished my fedora 14 upgrade. As 
it turns out, I ended up going off and buying an ATI video card, (Radeon 
HD 5750 Series). Since I'm not using all the 3D acceleration stuff (no 
compiz) the standard radeon driver worked fine with it. The trick was 
that I had to reinstall fedora 14 from scratch such that the 
installation procedure would do the honors in configuring the card. My 
issues with vmware workstation are gone and I seem to have a stable 
workstation environment again.

To note, I had an nvidia GTS 450 type card and the installer didn't 
configuring it properly (I had to use the basic video install option) 
and when I went to do the rpmfusion.org nvidia driver installation 
(which is what most people recommend, and I've been using it for several 
years now) that all fell apart due to some bug in nvidia-system-config 
python script. Then when I did get the proprietary nvidia driver going, 
the 3D acceleration kicked in great, (compiz worked nice), but vmware 
workstation started acting up, as did vmware player. Since my work 
depends soooo much on my vmware set up, I had to abort, go off and buy 
another video card and pray it would work better.... The free software 
gods did smile on me today... :)
