It might involve pid1 on Debian, but I'm sure not on Devuan.

You're wrong. The systemd industry has worked hard to convince various
software projects to work exclusively with systemd. But I think the
only software that will be extremely difficult to run on a sans-systemd
system is Gnome.

As far as systemdectomy, Devuan does that for you. Devuan is as if
Debian had never gone systemd.
