So take an X-Y positioning mechanism (RepRap) and mount it on a air
hockey table, and you get an air hockey playing robot:

Well...there's a bit more to it than that. It also involves vision
processing (OpenCV) to detect the puck and predict its future location.
The video shows off some of the behind the scenes processing the
controller is doing.
It's actually pretty impressive how fast it works.
When you get bored with playing hockey, you can put some paper onto the
table, pop a pen into the mallet (the think you hit the puck with), and
you've got a plotter. Albeit one that can't lift the pen, so the output
looks like something done on an Etch-a-sketch.
