Troops,

You may or may not have gotten this request, but I thought I pass along some information on it. If not now, you could well get one in the future.

There is a message with the subject line “Hello” that says it’s from Joe Freund. It is a SCAM. It is not from Joe. The original message says:

===Start=====
Good day, <your name>
Please do you have a moment?
Regards
Joe Freund
Sent from my iPhone
===End=====

I replied to it to see what kind of answer I would receive. If you respond to it, you will get the following message:

===Start=====
<Your first name> , sorry am putting this to you, I am tied up right now, Can you purchase iTunes gift card 6 pieces - $100 each? I would reimburse you when am through here, Let me know also I would prefer to call you but can't receive or call at the moment with my line.
Regards
Joe Freund

===End=====

Wonderful command of the English language, huh?

Totally BOGUS of course. This is why I set up the Listserv, and I try to have people NOT put a BUNCH of addresses in the TO: or CC: lines. For if a scammer gets the email, he/she can see the names and addresses of all the recipients. it’s a ready-made list of “targets” to send their scam to. If a Listserv is used, or the addresses are entered in the BCC: line, scammers cannot see any of the addresses other than the addressee and the sender.

In this case, the scammers apparently got a message someone sent with a list of all or most of the members, or a list of the BOD. A lot of the BOD got this message. Not sure how many other members got it.

If you’ve gotten this message, obviously you should just disregard it. Joe knows about it and I’ve talked with Joe and several others who have gotten it.

As the crusty old shift sergeant used to say on Hill Street Blues, “Be careful, it’s dangerous out there.”
