ssh, sftp, and perl scripts

I've gotten sftp set up and deployed on all my Solaris systems at work,
and now I'm looking to shut off ftp. However, our developers rely on a
perl ftp module for a bunch of their stuff, and I need to provide them
with an example of how to do this with sftp. Apparently the existing
FTP.pm doesn't support sftp.

What's the best way to do this in perl? If it can't be done easily with
sftp or scp, then what are the alternatives?
