Can telnet port 80 but cannot ping!

I think you need to be more specific. 
First, the default telnet port is 23. 80 is http. 

It appears that you have not configured telnet. Check to see if telnet is enabled in /etc/inetd.conf 
(or if you are using xinetd, check its config file). 

Ping is a different animal. You may have ping (eg. ICMP) blocked at your firewall. 

Also, it does appear that your host name is DNS served, but sometimes it is better to use a bare 
ip address.
