Why would a NIC card NOT be recognized?

First, what are the NICs?
Second, are all these systems similarly hardware configured? 
Could very well be that you have an IRQ conflict.
Third, are all these systems running the same kernel and modules. 

When they boot up, do they not recognize the NIC?
