Mandrake-Linux 8.1 will not shutdown X

I used Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to shutdown X but it just turns it off and starts it automatically.I need to be able to use linux in console mode instead of always using X.Get more from the Web.  FREE MSN Explorer download : http://explorer.msn.com
