This is indicative of a hardware issue.  Either your IDE controller
doesn't like your drive and isn't happy with the DMA settings or
vice-versa, or one of the two is looking to die (and if it's a Western
Digital drive, it's probably both situations!).  I'd give the drive a good
look and back up your data in a timely fashion, if I were you.  If the
drive is fine and the IDE controller is unhappy, perhaps upgrade to a
later kernel to see if the chipset support is better?  VIA chipsets in
particular come to mind.
