Yup. What he said. I run asterisk at home and have a slightly more 
advanced configuration, choosing between POTS/Various VoIP providers/My 
own network that my friends and I have set up. Asterisk works like a champ.

You will also need to get some IP phones. One of the suppliers I've seen 
bandied about on the Asterisk listservs is http://www.voipsupply.com/. 
I've never used them, however they seem to have a good selection of 
stuff. Also, eBay is your friend.

One of the live CD projects that my friends have had good luck with is 
Asterisk at Home (http://asteriskathome.sourceforge.net/). It is very spiffy.
