I think it's a Good Thing. Previously, laptops used a cold cathode
tube (flourescent) which required an inverter and high-voltage circuit
to the top of the display. The LEDs are less power-hungry and more
energy-efficient. LED has a great reputation for longevity, but I
don't think we yet have a lot of experience in laptops, so time will
tell.

Googling "laptop LED backlight" shows that they are popular features this year.
