It isn't that HTML is hard to deal with.  It's that the keyword databases that placement agencies and recruiters use (read: Bullhorn) don't grok HTML or PDF.  In other words, they could bung in your PDF or HTML resume but you'd never, ever show up in their internal search results, and if you never show up then you'll never get called for jobs.
