Turns out that wasn't needed.   When I went to take a look at the HP
touchpad again, it had spontaneously booted.   It seems to be working
as reliably as before (occasional app crashes, probably because I'm
still running Cyanogenmod 9).

No luck with the "burner" cell phones though.
