followup from nite with SAMBA

found my way to the eepro100 modul
have been following the outline in the Linux Gazette discussing below:

I have two linux machines each with a working interface card

edited /etc/hosts, /etc/host.conf, and /etc/resolv.conf

can ping locally on each machine, but can not ping machine to machine

no leds lite..if I have condonductivity something will lightup?....try another
new out of the pack cable????

any other suggestions welcome   Linux to linux first step...then Linux to
98.....
