This is definitely a problem.  The 'link' LED's will light up when you have
a good connection between your network card and the hub.  Most hub's have
link lamps, too.

If you are purchasing cables, you probably need to toggle a crossover/straight
thru switch.  If you are building cables, make sure you get a cable tester.
