My next project at work will be porting our application from Solaris 7 to Solaris 8. Mind you, I'm not a Sun expert, and have not tried it yet (hardware is on order). I'm looking for information on the difference between the two from a C/C++ software developer's perspective. And, of course, the differences between our existing compiler (Visual C++ 2.4) and whatever version comes with Solaris 8 (or is the newest stable version). Any information would be greatly appreciated, but links to documentation is just as welcome. I'm not afraid of work, I just didn't have much luck scouring Sun's website for porting documentation. Another question, which should be a lot easier to answer: I'm getting very confused by the multiple version numbers for the same release of Solaris/SunOS. It's really impeding my ability to do research. My understanding is that 2.6 = 2.6 5.7 = Solaris 7, but some people call it 2.7 5.8 = Solaris 8, but some people call it 2.8 But I have seen references to a 4.x series too. Can someone point me towards a Rosetta Stone or babelfish? Also, what version of the C++ compiler comes with each of these? I think we are currently using visual C++ 4.2. P.S.- I thought there would have been more Sun/Solaris newsgroups, but I only found a few global ones.
