Doug, it is a bit off topic, but it's all data these days... I live in the PRC and use the AT&T service for internet and (analog) cable. I go with my own modem and whittle the cable channels down to suit my budget. I think it runs 60 or so a month combined. They do give you a little break if you agree to use them as your sole service provider (Internet, Cable, Local telco) My building can't take advantage of the local telco part, because we are multi-tenant. See what you can do on that issue. Maybe they'll add on AT&T long distance at a "cut" rate too! Finally, as we do live in the PEOPLE'S republic of Cambridge, we can go and bitch to the fearless leaders about ISP infrastructure based monopoly and scream to give other ISP's a crack at our market over the common wire. More likely, they will take away our toys (like Speedvision) and put on another FACINATING public access channel. That's how they buy our boys downtown off ;-) HTH, ---------------------- Chuck Young Internet Systems Engineer, New England Region Genuity, Inc. ---------------------- -----Original Message----- From: owner-discuss at blu.org [mailto:owner-discuss at blu.org]On Behalf Of melniker at eecs.tufts.edu Sent: Thursday, March 01, 2001 4:03 PM To: discuss at blu.org Subject: off-topic: cable TV providers in cambridge This is off-topic, but I trust all of you to give me some good advice.... I just got an apartment in Cambridge, lease starting in May, and I'm looking at all my options for cable, telephone and Internet. It looks to me like AT&T Broadband is the only cable TV provider in Cambridge, but I really hope this isn't the case... their prices are so expensive! I live in Somerville now, and I'm paying about $40 ($20 for basic service and another $20 for 5 HBOs and 2 Cinemax chans. I know that AT&T has _digital_ cable, and this is probably what makes it so much more ($29.99 base + different packages of "premium" channels... the one I would want is ~$32), but I wish I had the *option* of getting digital, because I wouldn't(!) -- I need to base my decision on price, not quality. Anyone who lives in Cambridge and can offer me some advice or alternatives, please do so!
