Ok, I figured this out. Just before it hung during boot it tried to start vncserver. Removing vncserver from the init process fixed everything. Moral: Don't install vncserver until later ( if you want it). Apparently it wants a password first. That's what was giving me problems ( others too!). -- .david David Lapointe I can't understand why people are frightened by new ideas.
