The short of it: as of 08/08, AT&T changed their policy such that they will not put users' hostnames in the DNS servers, and enforced the policy on 10/15 (sorry, didn't notice because by then my service had been COMPLETELY down for several days, and was down for several days afterwards.) So if you're using AT&T, be aware of this. The funny part: When I called yesterday, the support droid was so clueless he told me to reboot my machine and try again. We did the "who'se on first" routine for a while, and I gave up. Then I tried using their online java chat support, and got the canned "DNS changes take 24-48 hours to propagate", to which I answered "If that were the problem, then I would get the OLD IP address, not 'host not found'". Another round or two of "who'se on first", and I give up again. So today, 2.5 days after I noticed the problem (because they finally restored my service), I call support, wait on hold, and then they tell me name server issues are only supported by the online java chat thingie now. So I use the online chat thingie, and find out the above answer, which I should have gotten yesterday. And because I like you, and extra rant today for free- I signed up Thursday with speakeasy.net for their DSL, which comes highly recommended. Friday I get an email saying the service is cancelled because I already have DSL provisioned on that phone line, which I don't. I call Verizon, and they say that I do have that line provisioned for DSL, but it's not theirs, and they can't tell me whose it is, and they can't cancel it without hearing from the providor, even though they don't know who that is ??!?!? Five phone calls later, I finally reach someone at Verizon who knows their own g*damn system codes, and recognizes the providor as themselves. I had ordered Verizon DSL and cancelled it the next day, but they never took it off my records. Then I call Speakeasy.net, and they tell me I have to start from scratch with them again. Oh joy. ------------------------------------------------------------------ DDDD David Kramer http://thekramers.net DK KD DKK D "Love is like pi DK KD -- natural, irrational, and very important."
