   While I haven't used it, I believe that this is just what RRDtool was 
made for. (http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~oetiker/webtools/rrdtool/)  It's 
basically MRTG without the SNMP data collection and html generation.  
AEleen Frisch gives an example of a system load graph in her "Top 10 
System Administration Tools" presentation.  You can grab the slides (PDF) 
from www.aeleen.com and RRDtool is #6 in the list.
