I have a coworker who has been playing with gentoo as of late. He likes the fact that the software has a tendency to be cutting/bleeding edge, and he likes to feel as though he's getting more speed out of everything because it's compiled specifically for his setup. Truth be told none of us can really see a difference. I will say that the maturity seems lacking to a minor extent. I played with it briefly and had the package mechanism (called "emerge") barf on me a little bit. Admittedly, that could have been my fault. In any case, Debian (stable) is very much that - a stable distro. However, don't expect cutting edge stuff. If you have an x86 machine, you can find alternative apt sources that have newer software - that may be tougher for an alpha. I guess it all comes down to "Waddaya gonna do with the system once it's running?" 8) -- "Things are fine, the upcoming semester approaches like a brick wall and we're in a 1962 Corvair with no brakes." - Paul Sand Cole Tuininga Lead Developer Code Energy, Inc colet at code-energy.com PGP Key ID: 0x43E5755D
