 Red Hat 7.1 :
at console, 
 esc followed by ctrl-shift-% -> query-replace
 ctrl+alt+shift+% -> nothing
in Gnome terminal (1.2.4) in X,
 both combinations -> query-replace-regexp.

 Red Hat 9 : 
at console,
 esc followed by ctrl+shift+% -> nothing (minibuffer says "ESC-" )
 esc followed by shift+% -> query-replace
 ctrl+alt+shift+% -> nothing
in Gnome terminal (2.2.1) in X,
 both -> query-replace-regexp .
