I actually set foot in a radio shack, and bought one of these: http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&product%5Fid=26-183 They require the pl2303 usb serial converter module to be compiled in the kernel, and work fairly well with 2.4.24 and 2.6.3 (but not with earlier 2.6 kernels). I think that there was a model in the store that cost less with a shorter cable.
