The first thing I would try is another window manager - if you want a suggestion, fluxbox is alright. If flux loads, you know it's a GNOME problem. If it doesn't, it's probably an X problem. GNOME won't load for me (Debian sid) but flux, KDE and everything else works fine. Go figure. Zack
