trouble with Linksys RT41P2

I don't have Comcast or a dog. I have RCN and bunnies. They like to eat
cables, so I have them off the ground. Target sells these little white
wire baskets than hang on the edge of shelves or desks. I have my
cable modem sitting in one of those baskets, and my router screwed to the
bottom of the desk. I also have an UPS screwed to the bottom of the desk,
so all the cabling is neat and "bunny proofed". It was a bit of work to
set up, but my connection stays up for eight months at a time.

Regarding your dhcp stuff. My guess is that if you had your router do a
dhcp lease request you would get the same result as having your desktop do
it. I vaguely remember having to rerequest my lease like that back in the
days when I had Comcast.
