My friend just bought a Linksys 802.11g router for his condo along with a new laptop so he and his wife can use the network at the same time. When I tested wireless I used my 802.11B router and my wireless PCMCIA card and the signal strength was ok. Based on this test, I decided that a vanilla 802.11G would suffice. Even with a low signal strength he gets between 18 and 36 Mbps which is good enough for Internet. The wireless is installed on the side of the room, farthest from the door in a bookshelf. One possible solution is for him to get some longer cat5 cables and move the router closer to the door. The condo is on a single floor with a long corridor from the bedroom to the living room. If the signal strength is still somewhat weak, I was wondering if one of the remote signal boosters might help (I probably wont need this).
