Grub/dd/ghost imaging problem solved

With the helpful aid of the latest bootable DVD version of Knoppix and
LinNeighborhood as part of Knoppix, I mounted the remote Windows share
containing images, and ran dd with gzip and split of /dev/sda to the
remote share. Took a couple of hours, and several 2 Gig files were
created. To test a restore, I used a DOS disk with fdisk to fully remove
the partitions, then fdisk /mbr to clear the master boot record, tested a
boot off the hard drive - it was empty. Started Knoppix again, remounted
the remote directory via Lin Neigh. and restored via cat, gzip, and dd
of=/dev/sda.

After three hours and a reboot, the split image successfully restored.
I would have tried partimage, but its web site claimed some potential
problems with ntfs, and I know dd, cat, split, and gzip won't fail me, as
they are common on most any linux system.

Thanks to all for the helpful insights.

Scott
