Duties And Responsibilities

Reports to Manager of Academic Computing, serves as key member of 
systems administration group supporting the busy production 
environment of the Distance Education Program at DCE, which runs 
Harvard Extension and Summer Schools. Responsible for administration 
of Unix (Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Solaris) and Windows servers as 
well as other server and network infrastructure related technologies. 
Configures, tunes, troubleshoots servers; upgrades, patches 
system/network hardware/software; Actively participates in planning, 
analysis and implementation of new servers and software to support 
Distance Ed program. Maintains several large RAID arrays on an NFS 
network, Tomcat application servers, Helix streaming video servers, 
and Backup Exec server. Analyzes systems operations to improve 
efficiency and monitors system operation to prevent downtime; works 
with vendors to correct problems and acts as a technical 
resource/advisor for the Academic Computing group. Creates, maintains 
procedural documentation. Provides on-call support to resolve 
problems by phone, remote access or on site. Works both independently 
and collaboratively with members of Academic Computing and Distance 
Ed staff. Occasional night and weekend work necessary to maintain and 
troubleshoot systems in a production environment.

Required Education, Experience and Skills

Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience and 5+ years of 
administration of Unix & Windows Servers. Demonstrated success in 
planning, organizing and executing IT infrastructure based projects. 
Solid understanding of networking fundamentals, architecture, and 
security is essential. Experience with RAID arrays and large 
filesytems (1 TB or larger). Familiarity with the following a plus: 
Real Networks or Quicktime streaming, Java, Perl, MySQL, Apache, 
Tomcat, OpenSSH. Adaptable to new technologies. Must have excellent 
written/verbal communication skills ; commitment to organizational 
success. --
