Interesting, I have encountered this same exact bug using dmraid (FakeRAID). I hacked around for a while trying to root cause the issue, however eventually, I had to get back to doing some real work and couldn't troubleshoot it any longer. I ended up using mdadm (Linux SoftRAID), and didn't have the same issue...
