I find this hard to believe. Have you explored the options that might be 
available through fuse? (In order for that to be useful, you'd need a 
fuse driver for ext2, or whatever native file system you choose, but I'm 
guessing such a thing is available.)

What about udev? In theory, it should be possible to create a udev 
script that handles the automount using a fuse driver.
