It sounds a bit like you're reinventing the wheel here. Mike Rubel popularized rsync-based snapshot backups a few years back and spawned a bunch of scripts and small applications that help you create and manage them: http://www.mikerubel.org/computers/rsync_snapshots/ I've written my own based on his page, and used rsnapshot and Dirvish and they all work reasonably well. The ones written by other people have more features.
