I have only tried this with x86-32 -> x86-64, and never had to touch an IA64 box, so I am not sure about that :-( Obviously, going from PPC32 -> IA64 would definitely not work, but I still wonder if you could build a static binary on x86-32 without using the IA64 extensions and run it.
