I have migrated from backup to tape to back up to external disc. It took one solid weekend to configure and a week of testing to feel comfortable to implement. I'm using BackupPC which leverages rsync, rsyncd, tar, and smb for a number of backup options. It is a Perl scripted application with a cgi interface that is easy to use once you understand the script file it writes to. I'm using rsync for the local BU and ssh rsync for a laptop and smb for the family desktop. I bought a Maxtor 60G usb device and reformatted to ext3 from ntfs so that I would get correct size readings. So now I have automatic weekly fulls and daily incs of all machines working well. My strategy is to buy one more disk each week till I have 3 or four disks with data. Once each has one rotation of backups I think I will go to a monthly rotation since the data I backup changes very little over a one week time period. Strategies have risks, so given this is non commercial what are some other rotation strategies others use.
