For most serial terminal applications, I think you need the null modem 
cable as well.  I use one of these: 
http://www.iogear.com/product/GUC232A/
which I connect to a null modem cable and then use screen on my Macbook 
to talk to the serial terminal on headless FreeBSD/Linux machines.  It 
works well.  screen is a nice utility for this purpose.
