Null-Modem serial-to-USB cable

Perhaps 15 years ago I would have known this one (except for the USB
part, I guess) but it's been at least that long since I've had to deal
with cables on this level. My laptop doesn't have a serial port, and
I'm trying to use it (via PuTTY) as a console for an embedded device
(yes, I got ahold if the ALIX2C3). While I specifically see null modem
cables, and I see USB-to-Serial cables, none of the latter mention any
potential crossover for their pinout. For example:

http://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-SBT-USC1K-Hi-Speed-Serial-Adapter/dp/B00065H0QQ/ref=acc_glance_ce_ai_-2_1_tit
or http://tinyurl.com/yueacs

While this is uncharted territory for me, I'm sure others have dealt
with this previously. Should this cable (or similar) be OK?

Thanks,
  -Don
