My wife and I went cellphone only a couple years back, the thought
being that nobody calls our house, they call *us*. Neither one of us
pick up the phone randomly so a quick glance at the incoming call to see
if it is interesting is about all the hassle we deal with.

You'd want to verify this, but I've heard that any phone line, active
or not, will dial 911 emergency calls even without paid service.
