One of my 'retreads' is a Xeon 2.4GHz quad with 2TB of PATA disk. Yes, PATA. Eight by 320GB in a pair of RAID 5 sets (1 hot spare each), concatenated with LVM. I'm using it as my rsnapshot server. Works fine, a perfect example of spanning many spindles yielding superior performance. --Rich P.
