Neither nook nor Kindle require encumbered books. nook handles unencumbered ePub just fine, while Kindle does unencumbered Mobi books equally well. These are, in fact, the respective devices' native formats. Both are capable of displaying unencumbered PDFs. Kindle can display plain text and HTML; I believe that nook can as well. --Rich P.
