Joining the others, with hopefully some adition, If you're using NetworkManager ( the little widget on the top right) , which ever details you'll change in /etc/network/interfaces, will be over-written by NetworkManager. You're options are : disabling network manager and then following the advice with /etc/network/interfaces, or, going through the GUI applet and looking for any kind of a checkbox that will stop that interface from starting up automatically.
