perfect answer, and I agree on most points, as I consider (likely incorrectly) my desktop as a work-in-progress (hacked ubuntu-pre-unity+gnome2+compiz+cairo+hacks) though it shouldn't be that hard. In fact I wont upgrade to the latest ubuntu as Unity is the worst thing I've seen in ages. Worse than gnome 1.3 which I used for quite a long time.
