A bit back I mentioned that I hadn't had problems with Thunderbird. Well... I've started having problems. It's minor stuff, really, mostly slowdowns due to the monolithic mbox-style local mail storage that Thunderbird uses. Still, it has become a pain in the ass. I've been looking at a bunch of different open source efforts. It's rather unfortunate that the pickings for cross-platform MUAs are so slim. The Macintosh options are exclusively for Macintosh. The Windows and Unix options use GTK+ which is great but it doesn't work natively on Macintosh. So, I'm going to be clever (for stupid values of "clever" :). I'm giving Claws Mail a try. I'm using the Gpg4win edition on Windows and I'll be trying the same edition on Mac using the Wineskin wrapper tool. I like it. It doesn't suffer from the feeping creaturism that has plagued Mozilla's projects. And, importantly, it doesn't use mbox files. Local copies of mail are stored in the MH format.
