Contrary to everyone talking about M$ imitating Apple, I think what's happening here is the opposite. The only reason they'd open source this is on the hope that someone else will invest in porting it, like what happened with Mono for .Net. I just don't see how that isn't ultimately doomed in the same way Mono always was: by not having the hooks into critical components that are not being open sourced, the ports will always be unusable for non-trivial applications that people actually want to use.
