With out knowing more about what they have setup or the company, is it possible its for vpn or external accessibility? I could see requiring more advanced firewall capability for a high end security system or a streaming media system. Another thing I considered when doing home and small office IT was providing a vpn option for troubleshooting, to avoid extra house calls. Even if your parents do not use it it could just be part of the standard package. from a strictly security perspective you could argue either way, given that your parents do not know how the hardware is used, unless it is maintained by the company.
