Sorry, I am a KDE-guy, so no experience with Gnome CUPS manager.

This is weird -- haven't you said, that the remote server is
running CUPS as well? Then why in the world you are connecting
to it with lpd:// protocol? It should be IMHO http:// or ipp://
type of URI.

Or you can do
sudo sh -l
