I have a friend who complains about the current crop of fixed wing pilots of smaller commercial aircraft in rural areas.  They are so married to approach plates and GPS that many have lost or never really had, piloting skills.  The live inside the cockpit.  They are lost in a world of dead reckoning and following maps and charts.  He, as a chief pilot, says he has to train pilots who by their hours, should be fully qualified for the  jobs they get.

Interesting read.  The generational shift is quite obvious.  As I have joked with some of today’s {well now yesterday’s scouts as the 58Ds have been retired to be replaced with drones} I’ll continue to but my TRUST in the Mark 1 Biological Compute and the Mark 1 Biological eyeball they simply “know” and feel things that the electronic whiz-bang electronics don’t.

Bruice who didn’t grow up on computer games.  😊

   A friend of mine that does aircraft instruments sent me this article. 
I find it hard to believe that the military wants the pilots to "not 
fly" the aircraft but rather just follow the inputs. I pointed out to 
him the Air Bus A320 that crashed at the Paris Air Show after they tried 
to do a low level fly by and the plane tried to land because the 
programmers knew nothing about touch and goes. The pilots did not kill 
the autopilot because they had not been trained on that. Next I pointed 
out the Ariana flight that crashed at SFO because the pilots were overly 
reliant upon the instruments controlling the landing. He pointed out the 
Air France flight that crashed in the Atlantic that had the pitot tube 
freeze over and the co pilot did not know how to recognize a faulty 
instrument or how to fly without instrument input "AKA" seat of your 
pants. I finished up pointing out the Sully Sullenberger landed his 
plane in the Hudson river with zero deaths because he was a seat of the 
pants flyer that knew how to react when all instruments say "SHIT".
