I just did a quick test with streaming from my desktop with the pchdtv
HD-5500 to my dual-boot laptop, and found the same thing. On Ubuntu
Gutsy Gibbon, vlc (0.8.6 from the Gutsy repository) started and
immediately crashed; on Windows XP Professional, it was the best tv
watching I've had downstairs.

So thanks for the tip; I was thinking I might have to get a better
downstairs computer to be able to watch the hdtv in the living room,
but it looks like it just needs an OS with better-tested video
software.

Which is a pity; even though I have all the programs (firefox, emacs,
audacity, rsync, ssh...) installed on Windows that I use on the laptop
in linux, I still find it a real nuisance to have to be booted into
Windows.
